Turn Old Windows into a Mini Greenhouse.

April 12, 2018

I think I just heard a Spring peeper, that’s a frog…just incase you didn’t know and I know I saw a fly yesterday.

This Winter seems to have dragged on for so long….

Seriously thinking of becoming a snow bird, moving to Florida in January, and not returning until the temperatures reach 65.

Enough said…even though its been cold, wet, windy and grey, did I mention cold, it has not stopped me from thinking “Spring”.

Shabby Chic, Mini Greenhouse

A Mini Greenhouse has been on my “to-do” list  for a while, and with the promise of Spring just around the corner, now is a good a time as any.

I’ve had these old windows stored away for just such an occasion. The table top was a donation and the legs was an old 4×4 we had lying around.

old windows

I made sure all the windows where the same height and width. Then cut each leg 16″ in length and attached them to the under side of the table top. You will need long screws 2 1/2 to 3″ long and some glue.

table leg

I sanded the top of the table and stained it with a Minwax Dark Walnut. Then attached the windows to the table top  and screwed them together. For the roof I used 2 longer narrower windows I joined together using a couple of 2×2 old table legs.

Since these windows had never been painted I applied a coat of  Old White ASCP. I decided not to sand them or wax them, in fact I didn’t apply any type of finish over the paint. I wanted the windows to develop a natural weathered look over time… we will see how that works out!

Now for the fun part, decorating…and wouldn’t you know it, it’s snowing outside…

3 day’s later…

So the temperatures are not much warmer but at least the sun is shining.

My mini greenhouse is in its new spot on the back porch and its ready for some embellishments.

A couple of window boxes (made from old whisky boxes). Some old draw pulls and my favorite, 2 pot holders made with a couple of old chair springs. Click here for more on the pot holders. I added some trim to the front to help cover the grooves in the windows and added a little fence topper to the roof. The trim was painted with ASCP Duck egg blue, just to make it pop.

Now I just need some warm weather so I can finally put out my plants.

This project was so much fun to do and the cost was minimal, I will definitely build another one.
